In Praise of the Local: Why Regional Magazines Matter

Regional magazines play an essential role in discovery, trust-building, and audience engagement.

One of our team’s favorite travel rituals has nothing to do with airports or hotel upgrades. It starts the moment we check into our room.

Before we unpack, check email, or even look at the view. We reach for the local magazine. Because if you really want to understand a city, the fastest way in isn’t always a search bar.

It’s the local magazine where your can browse places to see and things to do from a trusted source. Where do locals actually eat? What’s good? That magazine becomes our field guide and our unofficial Bible for the city.

They Know What’s Good

Great regional magazines work because the people behind them know what’s good; they’ve been there and likely know the owners/team. They’re not guessing. They’re curating with context.

Regional Mag- Bay Harvest

Years ago, flipping through a San Francisco publication, we came across a feature on The Slanted Door, to this day it is one of our all-time favorite restaurants. And when local knowledge turned into a great experience. During one late-night dinner there with the clients from New York, we spotted a popular late night talk show host, also New York–based, grabbing dinner after taping his show. We all laughed/great food/great people/great memory.

All brought together by a local magazine recommendation.

That’s the power of trusted regional media and why we have an appreciation for these publishers. They are close to their audiences, rich in community insight, and just like national publishers trusted.

Our role, across ClicknRead, bPerx, and WRSS is to help great publishers, large and small, extend that trust into measurable engagement and modern distribution environments.

We believe regional magazines still play an essential role in discovery, trust-building, and audience engagement.

And we’re proud to support the publishers who continue to bring cities to life, one issue, one story, one great recommendation at a time.
